Irish actor Brendan O\u2019Carroll <\/a>has apologised over a \u2018clumsy\u2019 joke where a \u2018racial term was implied\u2019 during rehearsals for the upcoming Christmas<\/a> special of Mrs Brown\u2019s Boys<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The BBC<\/a> temporarily paused rehearsals to investigate the incident urgently, which have since resumed in Glasgow at the broadcaster\u2019s Pacific Quay studios in Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shows are now going ahead as planned, Metro<\/strong> understands.<\/p>\n

Mrs Brown\u2019s Boys creator and star O\u2019Carroll, 69, will return to his role <\/a>as mischievous matriarch Agnes Brown in the Christmas Day and New Year\u2019s Day specials.<\/p>\n

\u2018At a read-through of the Mrs Brown\u2019s Boys Christmas specials, there was a clumsy attempt at a joke, in the character of Agnes, where a racial term was implied,\u2019 O\u2019Carroll said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u2018It backfired and caused offence, which I deeply regret and for which I have apologised.\u2019<\/p>\n

A BBC spokesperson also said: \u2018Whilst we don\u2019t comment on individuals, the BBC is against all forms of racism, and we have robust processes in place should issues ever arise.\u2019<\/p>\n

A source also shared with The Mirror<\/a>: \u2018The whole production of the Christmas special was paused while the investigation was carried out. T<\/p>\n

\u2018The entire cast and crew were stood down in the wake of the comment as the BBC tried to get to the bottom of it.\u2019<\/p>\n

Last year, Mrs Brown\u2019s Boys returned for a four-part series.<\/p>\n

Despite being a regular feature on Christmas schedules<\/a> for more than a decade, the episodes marked the first mini-series run since 2013.<\/p>\n

Mrs Browns Boys, which took home a trophy at the 2024 National Television Awards, famously divides TV fans but still draws in up to five million viewers <\/a>per episode.<\/p>\n

Due to its popularity, the BBC has greenlit a fifth series, which is scheduled to begin production in 2025, and confirmed additional Christmas specials.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Carroll announced last month: \u2018We are going to film another series in April and May [2025]. It\u2019s lovely to be asked to do another one.\u2019<\/p>\n

The forthcoming Christmas special will mark the show\u2019s 50th episode.<\/p>\n

News of the latest probe follows a string of scandals at the BBC.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, a months-long internal investigation began following a series of complaints about misconduct from Strictly Come Dancing professionals.<\/p>\n

Amanda Abbington, 50, accused Giovanni Pernice, 34, of bullying her in the training room, prompting his departure from the show.<\/p>\n

Laura Whitmore and Ranvir Singh also complained about his training methods.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, it was alleged that Graziano Di Prima, 30, kicked Love Islander Zara McDermott, 27, with hours of footage reviewed as a result.<\/p>\n

Both Italian dancers denied the accusations made, with Di Prima stating that he is \u2018not an abusive man\u2019, while Pernice has since joined the Italian version of Strictly as a professional.<\/p>\n

Following the conclusion of the lengthy internal investigation just weeks ago, the BBC\u00a0upheld several complaints\u00a0against Pernice <\/a>but cleared him of the most serious \u2018physical aggression\u2019 allegations.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, the BBC was also thrown into crisis last year when\u00a0former newsreader Huw Edwards<\/a>\u00a0admitted possessing indecent images of children.<\/p>\n

Sentencing him last month, chief magistrate Paul Goldspring told Edwards his \u2018reputation is now in tatters\u2019 and called his crimes \u2018extremely serious offences\u2019. <\/p>\n

The disgraced broadcaster, who reported on the death of Queen Elizabeth II, was handed\u00a0six months\u2019 imprisonment,\u00a0suspended\u00a0for two years.<\/p>\n

As a result of the string of controversies, the BBC has vowed to \u2018crack down\u2019 on abuses of power<\/a>.<\/p>\n

BBC Chair\u00a0Samir Shah\u00a0said: \u2018I cannot emphasise enough that I am fully committed to tackling inappropriate or abusive behaviour.<\/p>\n
